Why is it important for men and women to have different hands placed on top of the other?

Thank you for your question about the hands. Some background information – there are several hundred schools of qigong, and different schools place hands in the opposite direction from what I learned. When I asked my master, she said that it was based on the philosophy and techniques of that certain school. On a broader context, it has to do with the yin and yang, the principles of Taoism. The yin is feminine and represents the moon (dark); yang is male and represents the sun (bright). Neither is good nor bad, just representations of the above and the importance of balance of dark/light. The qigong I teach evolves from physical to spiritual, the left side representing yin, right side representing yang. The hand on top balances hand on the bottom – male energy balances female energy. For men, the opposite, female energy balances male energy.

Thank you Gayook! The routine I practice is the child longevity routine created by Dr. Yan Xin. He instructs women to put their right hand over the left and visa versa for men. I get the question quite often from my student why the hand placement is so important. I knew it had to do with yin and yang but wanted a more elaborate explanation for them because I’m sure there are physical/mental/emotional/spiritual benefits from it. Dr. Yan Xin is a true master and does nothing “accidentally.” Everything he does and teaches stems from purpose, so I asked. 🙂 Thank you for taking a moment to respond. Take good care.
